Jane Goodall Institute Belgium

The Jane Goodall Institute, established in 1977, carries on Dr. Goodall's ground-breaking study of chimpanzee behaviour, which revolutionised how scientists view the interrelationship between humans and other animals. An initiative to safeguard chimpanzees and their habitats has grown into a global movement that encourages the next generation of young people to become global citizens and promotes community-based conservation in Africa. Jane Goodall established the Roots & Shoots programme in 1991 with the goal of encouraging young people to take initiative in their communities to safeguard animals, people and the environment, also referred to as the APE approach. The Jane Goodall Institute Belgium works with staff and volunteers to bring to life Jane Goodall’s dream to live in harmony with nature, supported by our partners, sponsors, and donors. We do this through 1) Planting forests that create ecosystems in which biodiversity can thrive and support local communities. 2) Roots & Shoots, our youth empowerment programme, educates young people in Belgium on the importance of leading a sustainable lifestyle and guides & empowers them to become humanitarian leaders. 3) We relentlessly create awareness on the need to protect endangered primates such as chimpanzees and raise funds for JGI’s chimpanzee programs in Africa. Volunteers support our work though 5 different teams (Advocacy, Communications, Events, Fundraising for Chimps, Roots & Shoots) and provide for additional capacity in the day-to-day activities and at specific occasions including workshops for youth. We are proud of our efforts. They make a difference to the environment and society each day in Belgium and in Africa.
